Structure of a Shiatsu Session
Shiatsu is normally done with the receiver lying comfortably on a futon on the floor. The practitioner exerts pressure, mainly with the thumbs and palms of the hands, on energy channels (meridians) that run through the body. Some manipulation and joint rotation may also be used. As for accupuncture (which also works with the energy points and channels), working with the energy in this way can help the receiver's Ki / Chi so that it flows more evenly. Working in this way can help the receiver tune in to their body and understand their needs so they can better support their own health.

A session begins with a diagnosis of the flow of energy (Ki) in the meridians, so that the practitioner knows where to concentrate the work. The treatment will cover the whole body, and, typically, be given with the receiver in 2 different positions (for example, lying on their back and on their front or side). A session may last anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, depending on the needs of the receiver. The receiver can give feedback or ask questions at any time during the session. At the end of the session, another energy diagnosis will be done in order to see whether any change has occurred.

Practicalities
When receiving shiatsu, you remain fully clothed. It is best to wear loose, preferably cotton, clothing, such as a cotton track suit. Receiver's may wish to bring a Covid mask to wear during the working part of the session, and can request that the practitioner wear a mask.

Avoid having a large meal or alcohol before or directly after having shiatsu

A session usually lasts between 45 and 60 minutes and costs £50 (concessions available; payment by cash or cheque only). The receiver will be asked to fill in a case history form before coming to the session, so that the therapist can find out about any existing medical conditions, medication, etc..Some of the questions ask for information relating to oriental medicine theory.

Some people have a reaction the day after receiving shiatsu. This may be a boost of energy, a feeling of wellbeing, tiredness, or perhaps slightly flu-like symptoms, as toxins are released. These symptoms should pass off in about a day. If you have any questions about reactions to a session, contact the practitioner to discuss these.
